THE IDEA
To develop a recognized high-standard franchise in fair-trade shops: ALTERMUNDI. The goal is to widen and democratize the fair trade market with an upscale franchise concept, enlarged to a wide range of goods such as furniture, decoration, clothing, fashion items and food. The main idea is to sell design products in eco-friendly shops. As a consequence, fair trade and ecological features are not the only requirements to make products valuable.

The ALTERMUNDI franchise
The ALTERMUNDI franchise was created in 2006. In order to develop this new market, franchise fees are low – 4.5% of turnover. The franchises are obliged to buy products from the wholesale company (La Compagnie du Commerce Equitable, or “Fair Trade Company”) totalling at least 50% of their annual purchase volume. The remaining 50% must be approved by the ALTERMUNDI team. As of the beginning of 2010, 12 stores were open in France and 30 more are expected by 2012, including some in adjacent countries.
