In the post-operative care unit at CRF Villiers-sur-Marne, she carefully disinfects her hands. But it is No\u00e9mie herself who cleans her scars. \u201cWe teach children how to take care of themselves so that, once they go home, they can be fully independent,\u201d explains St\u00e9phanie.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This simple scene reflects the centre\u2019s philosophy: care goes beyond medical treatment, helping patients regain autonomy and return home as often as possible. After ten minutes, No\u00e9mie heads back to class. \u201cI hope I haven\u2019t stolen too much of your playtime!\u201d smiles St\u00e9phanie.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n   <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div id=\"field_pow0aaf97a47e754824\" class=\"container-fluid px-0 flexible_section block_adaptativetextandimage\">\n <div id=\"field_pow0aaf97a47e754824_inner\" class=\"container flexible_section_inner\">\n\n   <div class=\"row flexible_section_content adaptativeimage \" id=\"textimagebanner_pow0aaf97a47e754824\">\n\n   <div class=\"col-12 col-sm-7 order-2 order-sm-1 colonne colonne1 colonne1_pow0aaf97a47e754824\">\n    <div class=\"colonne_inner text-left justify-content-start\">\n<h2><span class=\"TextRun SCXW165744886 BCX8\" lang=\"FR-FR\" xml:lang=\"FR-FR\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165744886 BCX8\">School: A vital ally in recovery<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>That same day, in one of the mixed-level classrooms, pupils are giving presentations on current events. Sophie, a history and geography teacher who has been working at the centre for four years, adapts her teaching methods constantly. With pupils staying between two weeks and three months, flexibility is key.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<span style=\"color: #087564\">There\u2019s something very particular here: pain, illness, accidents \u2013 these experiences often make children grow up faster,\u201d she observes. \u201cAs a teacher, you need to take that into account.<\/span>\u201d The school has three secondary classes, one primary class, and a class for adapted learning. To ensure continuity, Sophie works closely with families and the children\u2019s home schools.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n   <\/div>\n   <div class=\"col-12 col-sm-5 order-1 order-sm-2 colonne colonne2 colonne2_pow0aaf97a47e754824\">\n   <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div id=\"field_powd938fb71fdda4088\" class=\"container-fluid px-0 flexible_section block_columns\">\n <div id=\"field_powd938fb71fdda4088_inner\" class=\"container flexible_section_inner\">\n\n   <div class=\"row flexible_section_content\">\n\n   <div class=\"col-sm-12 colonne colonne1\">\n    <div class=\"colonne_inner  text-left\">\n<p><span>\u201cThe teachers are really nice, and we follow the same programme as in secondary school,\u201d says \u00c9lias, 12, who has been treated at the centre for six months. He dreams of becoming a banker or a lawyer one day. \u201cWhat I like best here are my friends, the staff, and the educators,\u201d he adds. His daily routine mixes lessons with treatment: \u201cI have class in the morning, physiotherapy from 12 to 1, then some muscle training, a break, then hydrotherapy. I used to sleep here, but now I go home at night. Sometimes it\u2019s tiring, but it feels good to go home.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the classrooms, the sense of solidarity is strong. \u201cWhether their disability is temporary or permanent, the children share an experience that brings them together,\u201d explains Sophie. Friendships form quickly; some even ask to change bedrooms so they can stay with their classmates after lessons.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n   <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div id=\"field_pow99100651ad3045c7\" class=\"container-fluid px-0 flexible_section block_columns\">\n <div id=\"field_pow99100651ad3045c7_inner\" class=\"container flexible_section_inner\">\n\n   <div class=\"row flexible_section_content\">\n\n   <div class=\"col-sm-12 colonne colonne1\">\n    <div class=\"colonne_inner  text-left\">\n<h2><b><span>A Coordinated approach<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>Upstairs, in the paediatric ward, the corridors are quiet. \u201cDuring the day, no teenager stays in their room \u2013 they\u2019re at school, in physio, or doing activities,\u201d explains Carine, the senior nurse. Alongside the healthcare staff, educators help to provide moments of relief and escape. Outings are regularly organised \u2013 to the cinema, to Disneyland, or simply for a burger \u2013 giving children the chance to step outside the hospital setting. \u201cThese small moments allow them to breathe and to create memories,\u201d she says.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Close collaboration between staff is essential. \u201cWe try to share as much as possible because children are different in different settings \u2013 they\u2019re not the same with us in care, with the physios, or with the educators,\u201d she explains. This coordinated approach makes it possible to adapt support to each individual journey. \u201cWe don\u2019t have the same roles, so we don\u2019t have the same perspective \u2013 sometimes we look at things differently, which helps us understand them better.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The paediatric service also enriches the whole centre. The director notes: \u201cThe adult patients themselves have asked for intergenerational meetings.\u201d These shared experiences are beneficial: \u201cIt helps adults put their own situation into perspective when they see the children\u2019s energy and resilience.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b><span>A New and Necessary Project: The Parents\u2019 House<\/span><\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The upcoming opening of the \u201cParents\u2019 House\u201d at the end of 2025 is another step in this holistic approach. \u201cThe aim is to accommodate the families of hospitalised children, with studios available for the whole duration of their child\u2019s stay,\u201d explains Julien Giarmana, the Centre\u2019s director. Construction began in April 2025, just a few metres from the hospital. The project meets a fundamental need: maintaining family ties during sometimes lengthy hospitalisations. \u201cIt will provide a comfortable, welcoming space, much better than the temporary arrangements we currently offer within the hospital,\u201d he adds.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At CRF Villiers, rehabilitation is not just a step towards recovery. It is a holistic pathway, where each child can continue to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment \u2013 surrounded by a team whose priority is their wellbeing.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Every year in France, many children face long hospital stays.
